Scam Type Explainer
Understanding how each scam works is your first line of defence. These are the four most common crypto fraud types — what they are, the red flags to watch for, and real-world examples.
Developers build hype around a project, attract investor funds, then suddenly abandon it — draining all liquidity and leaving token holders with worthless assets and no recourse.
- Anonymous or unverifiable team
- No independent smart contract audit
- Liquidity not locked or locked short-term
- Unrealistic APY or tokenomics
- Excessive urgency — “limited time only”
A long-con romance and investment scam. Fraudsters build trust over weeks or months before introducing a “can’t-miss” investment platform. Victims see fake profits — until they try to withdraw.
- Unsolicited contact via WhatsApp, Telegram or dating apps
- Guaranteed or unusually high returns
- Platform not independently verifiable
- Withdrawal blocked, taxed or delayed
- “Insider access” framing
Coordinated groups artificially inflate a token’s price through bulk buying and social media hype, then sell their holdings at the peak — crashing the price and wiping out late buyers.
- Sudden price spike with no news or utility
- Heavy promotion in Telegram or Discord groups
- Top wallets hold majority of supply
- Upcoming team token vesting unlocks
- Low market cap, easily manipulated volume
Fake websites, emails, social accounts or support bots trick users into revealing seed phrases, private keys, or approving malicious smart contract transactions that drain their wallets.
- Look-alike URLs (e.g. coinbаse vs coinbase)
- Any request for your seed phrase or private key
- Unsolicited “support” messages or DMs
- Urgent action required — account suspended etc.
- Token approval requests from unknown sites
